Sigma Kappa Delta is the English Honor Society for Two-Year Colleges. It was founded in 1996 at Cottey College. Sigma Kappa Delta headquarters is currently located at Calhoun Community College. The society strives to: - Confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in undergraduate studies; - Provide, through its local chapters, cultural stimulation on college campuses and promote interest in literature and the English language in surrounding communities; - Foster all aspects of the discipline of English, including literature, language, and writing; - Promote exemplary hero and awesome fellowship among its members; - Exhibit high standards of academic excellence; and Serve society by fostering literacy. A Sigma Kappa Delta chapter is more than just other college club. It is a special entity that opens the doors of occasion for its members and facilitates academic, professional, and private growth. There are more than 100 active chapters across the country, each defined by its place and membership, yet bound to the rest by the common goal of promoting excellence in the disciplines of the English language. With over 100 active chapters located in the United States, approximately 2500 members are inducted annually. Sigma Kappa Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate studies. Members of every chapter have the occasion to share their love of literature and linguistics with like-minded peers, participate in rewarding activities, and be recognized for their accomplishments. They may also apply, or in some cases instantly qualify, for one or more of the Society's numerous awards and scholarships. The guiding principles of Sigma Kappa Delta can be found in our constitution. Our parent organization, Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, is the proud sponsor of The National English Honor Society (NEHS). NEHS, a tool of Sigma Tau Delta serves students and faculty in high schools throughout the country and provides an outreach to thousands of students and faculty who share a commitment to excellence in English language arts. Founded on April 21, 1996, Sigma Kappa Delta has its origins in Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honor society for four-year colleges and universities. Dr. William Johnson, Executive Director of Sigma Tau Delta and Professor of English at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, recommended a fresh national English honor society designed especially for two-year college students under the direction of Sigma Tau Delta. Sigma Tau Delta's Board graciously agreed. Thus, Sigma Kappa Delta was founded when Dr. Johnson invited four two-year college instructors to meet April 18-21, 1996, at the Chicago Allerton Hotel on the Miracle Mile.
